摘要The effective utilization of biomaterials in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering critically relies on the understanding of the intricate interactions between cells and biomaterials. The surface energy of biomaterials affects various cellular functions, but this mechanism is unclear. How to improve cell functions on the hydrophobic surface is a promising approach for practical application. In this study, we modified a glass slide surface with inert alkyl groups having different chain lengths. The surfaces had only polar and nonpolar surface energies but no charged or reactive groups. The adhesion, spreading, and proliferation of mouse L929 cell and the absorption of serum protein were studied on these surfaces. The reduction in polar surface energy inhibited these cell behaviors. The nonpolar surface energy appeared to determine protein adsorption and affinity on the surface, and the polar surface energy may stabilize protein conformation. Cell adhesion and spreading on the hydrophobic surface can be significantly improved by decreasing serum concentrations. This improvement can be effectively applied in biomedicine and tissue engineering.
